Welcome
Welcome to the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin, Yatton, with its unique truncated spire which has been a landmark down the centuries,
rising as it does from the surrounding flat moorland.
This ancient church was known long ago as the Cathedral of the Moors.
The octagonal Chapter House, built in the 1970's, adjoining it, reflects the truncated spire, and houses the parish office, the hub of our church life.
If you care to drop in, the office is open on weekdays from 9am to 12noon, and you are assured of a lovely smile from our
Parish Secretary, Eleanor, who can answer most of your questions.
The Churchwardens and our Vergers are always ready to help too, so don't hesitate to contact them. (see below)
St. Mary's, though steeped in history, has moved into the twenty first century with gentle dignity, offering a variety of worship to suit various tastes,
and we do our utmost to make visitors feel welcome. Our Sunday Morning Parish Communion at 9.30am,is the centre of our worship together as a church family,
and attracts a lively congregation of 120+ between the ages of 0 to 90 years. Family Services, with children taking a more active part are held monthly.
Sunday School is in the Chapter House, every Sunday at 9.30am, and the children come into church to receive a Blessing before the service ends.
You can drop your child off and collect later, or simply enjoy coming to the service knowing your child is busily engaged in Sunday School.
There is also a crèche for babies and toddlers.
We have a cup of coffee in the Chapter House every week after the 9.30am service, giving us chance for a natter with friends and newcomers alike,
so we get to know each other better. It's a good opportunity for the clergy to relax with us too.
We have a mixed choir of boys, girls, men and women, a magnificent organ, and gifted Choir leaders,
so if you like singing there's plenty of opportunity.
Our present Team Rector is an accomplished composer of church music, and much of his work and that of our Choirmaster, is used in some of our services.
Regular midweek said services of Holy Communion are especially popular with those who like the quiet form of worship they offer.
Early risers can join our clergy for Morning Prayer on weekdays at 8.30am and Sunday Evensong takes place on a rota basis with the other churches in the team.
There is a lot to get involved in with laity-led groups looking after the different areas of church 'work' e.g. Mission, Worship, Pastoral Care. etc.
The Chapter House is in constant use with a Playgroup in term time, and other lively group activities from First Steps for Mums and toddlers,
through Magnets and the 11+ Group for older children, to a thriving Mothers' Union branch, to name but three.
Twice-monthly Meditations provide an oasis of Peace in this busy world, and Prayers for Healing ensure that
we remember those who have asked for our prayers. The Mothers' Union's half hour monthly prayer time is held in the church.
Details of all our activities are given elsewhere
The church is open every weekday morning, and folk wander in for a quiet moment of prayer, or just to sit and drink in the Peace that
pervades the silence of this sacred place, which has stood for hundreds of years as a witness to God's love, and where prayers have been said down the centuries.
Perhaps you would like to pop in too, or maybe join us at one of our services. We'd love to meet you. Come and see!
